Mikel Cronin

I have been climbing for 21 years in the Black Hills of South Dakota and working as a fire fighter at the specialized rescue station for the past 12. I began developing routes about 18 years ago in Spearfish Canyon and The VC. Although we have enough world class granite here to last multiple lifetimes I prefer the grueling task of limestone bolting. The most enjoyable part of putting up routes for me is seeing other climbers getting psyched on one of my creations and possibly taking a good ride to boot.

I stay active in the local climbing community by being on the board of the BHCC, Access Fund Regional Coordinator, La Sportiva Ambassador and the author of a guide book for Black Hills called Spearfish Canyon, The VC and other Black Hills Limestone. We try to maintain a standard with the routes going by using quality stainless steel bolts and hangers, making sure we use the correct bolt for the correct placement and overall keeping things as safe as possible. Bottom line is have fun, it’s just rock climbing.
